Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 4.6: 4.6 Prevent roll-away of vehicles and mobile plant

A roll-away is unintentional movement of plant that is incorrectly immobilised. Safe immobilisation practices include using wheel chocks, parking with wheels turned so the vehicle would roll towards the kerb where possible, parking in the right gear (park for automatic, first gear facing uphill and reverse facing downhill for manual, but not in gear when parked for maintenance), lowering plant attachments such as blades, buckets and rippers to the ground, applying the handbrake before leaving the vehicle, turning the engine off and removing the keys, and establishing a marked exclusion zone around the vehicle where necessary, for example immediately downhill of a truck or trailer being unloaded. The code refers to the Safe Work Australia fact sheet on prevention of vehicle roll-aways.
