Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 4.4: 4.4 Fit warning devices that suit the plant and its environment (rr 212 and 215)

If plant design includes an emergency warning device, or one is needed to minimise risk, it must be positioned to work to best effect. Where plant could collide with pedestrians or other powered mobile plant it must have a warning device that warns persons at risk of its movement, and warning devices should be fitted to fixed plant to warn of imminent risks such as start-up movement or release of steam or overpressure. Options include automatic audible alarms (distinct, audible only in the hazard area, and combined with other devices where several machines use the same sound or workers become desensitised), motion sensors, lights chosen for intensity and colour so they are visible, rotary flashing lights (not suited to plant stationary for long periods or in restricted areas), percussion alarms, radio sensing devices and air horns. Motion sensor alarms should not be deactivated if the operator has restricted vision when reversing.
