Section 4: Specific control measures – Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace

Australia Model Code of Practice: Managing the Risks of Plant in the Workplace 4.1c: 4.1 Use presence-sensing safeguarding where physical guards are not reasonably practicable

If physical guards are not reasonably practicable a presence-sensing system can be used: these detect a person or part of a person entering a defined area and stop the machine before the danger zone is reached, for example photoelectric light beams, laser scanners and foot pressure mats. They rely on sensitive trip mechanisms and on the machine stopping quickly, possibly with a brake. Effective systems need a trip device suited to the work and correctly located beams that take account of speed of entry and machine stopping time. The person with management or control must keep a record of safety integrity tests, inspections, maintenance, commissioning, decommissioning, dismantling and alterations of the plant (r 226).
