Chapter 5 Controlling the risks: hierarchy of controls, maintenance and review, personal hearing protectors, audiometric testing – Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work

Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work 5.3-REG44: Where PPE is used, select it to minimise risk and ensure it suits the work and hazard, fits and is reasonably comfortable, and is maintained, repaired and replaced so it keeps working and stays clean and hygienic; provide information, training and instruction in its use, wearing, storage and maintenance; workers must use it as instructed and not misuse it

What does 5.3-REG44 require?

Regulation 44 governs any PPE used at the workplace. The PCBU must make sure, as far as is reasonably practicable, that the equipment is chosen to reduce risk: it suits the work and its hazards, it is the right size and fit and reasonably comfortable for the person wearing it, and it is kept in repair and replaced so that it goes on protecting the wearer, staying clean, hygienic and in working order. Anyone who directs work must give the worker information, training and instruction on how to use and wear the PPE and how to store and maintain it. The worker, in turn, must as far as reasonably able use or wear the PPE in line with that information, training or any reasonable instruction, and must not deliberately misuse or damage it.
