Chapter 5 Controlling the risks: hierarchy of controls, maintenance and review, personal hearing protectors, audiometric testing – Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work

Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work 5.1-MAINT: Maintain plant and noise control equipment regularly, checking for changes in noise level from worn bearings and gears, poor lubrication, blunt blades, loose or unbalanced parts and air or steam leaks, and inspect and maintain vibration mounts, impact absorbers, gaskets, seals, silencers and barriers, roadways, suspensions and tyres

What does 5.1-MAINT require?

Plant gets noisier as it ages, so regular maintenance is essential. A rise in noise usually points to worn bearings or gears, poor lubrication, blunt blades, loose parts, out-of-balance rotating parts or leaking steam or air, all of which good maintenance quietens. The noise control hardware itself, vibration mounts, impact absorbers, gaskets, seals, silencers, barriers and the like, needs regular inspection and upkeep, and where relevant workplace roadways, vehicle suspensions and tyres are kept in order to limit whole-body vibration.
