Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work
Chapter 5 Controlling the risks: hierarchy of controls, maintenance and review, personal hearing protectors, audiometric testing – Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work

Australia Model Code of Practice Managing Noise and Preventing Hearing Loss at Work 5.3-MAINT: Inspect and maintain hearing protectors regularly (undamaged ear-muff seals, headband tension, no unofficial modifications, soft clean earplugs, disposable plugs worn once), train workers in use, fit, care and maintenance, write the need to wear protectors into safety procedures, put someone in charge of issue and replacements, spot-check wearing and correct use, and have managers and supervisors set the example in hearing protector areas

What does 5.3-MAINT require?

Hearing protectors are inspected and maintained regularly so they stay in good, clean condition: ear-muff seals intact, headband tension not slackened, no home-made modifications, compressible earplugs still soft, pliable and clean, and disposable plugs used once only. The PCBU must train, inform and instruct workers in using, fitting, caring for and maintaining their protectors, and should also write the requirement to wear them into safety procedures, give one person charge of issuing protectors and keeping replacements to hand, run spot checks to see that workers are wearing them when required and using them properly, and make sure every manager and supervisor sets the example by wearing protection whenever they are in a hearing protector area.
