Section 2: Managing WHS risks – Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry

Australia Model Code of Practice: Healthcare and Social Assistance Industry 2.7: 2.7 Use interim controls where needed, but never as the permanent fix, and act at once on serious danger

Some controls take time, such as work process design or physical changes needing planning and approval, so where risk cannot yet be eliminated short-term interim controls may be needed, but they should not remain as a permanent fix. If a hazard poses an immediate or significant danger, immediate action is required, which may mean stopping unsafe work until controls are in place, isolating the hazard or putting temporary controls in place until a permanent solution exists.
