Section 3: Assessing the risks – Australia Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks

Australia Model Code of Practice: Hazardous Manual Tasks 3.3a: 3.3 Test for repetitive movement, sustained or awkward postures and repetitive or sustained force

Ask whether the task involves repetitive movement, sustained or awkward postures, or repetitive or sustained forces. As a guide, repetitive means a movement or force performed more than twice a minute, and sustained means a posture or force held for more than 30 seconds at a time. Risk rises with the degree of bending and twisting, is greatest at the extremes of movement and when it feels uncomfortable, and rises with the size, frequency and speed of the force. Duration matters: as a guide long duration is more than 2 hours in total over a shift or more than 30 minutes continuously, and tasks using the same body parts should be added together. Postures and movements of particular concern when repetitive or sustained include bending the back or head forward or sideways more than 20 degrees, bending backwards more than 5 degrees or looking up, twisting more than 20 degrees, working with hands above shoulder height, reaching more than 30 cm forwards or sideways or behind the body, standing on one leg, wrist bending with twisting or grabbing, squatting, kneeling, crawling, lying or jumping, and very fast movements.
