Steel sheet piling is generally used for large building foundations and other major excavations, to hold back large embankments, or where excavation is close to neighbouring buildings, and can be installed before digging starts (Figure 13). Where the ground is so unstable, for example loose running sand, that the walls are likely to collapse during digging, the piling should be driven before excavation begins. Figure 13 shows a minimum height of sheet piling of 300 mm above the surface and twin steel jacks where heavy loading needs extra strength.
