Australia Model Code of Practice: Excavation Work 6.1b: 6.1 Choose among the three types of ground collapse control

Where ground collapse may happen, three main types of control can be used: benching and battering; positive ground support such as shoring; and shielding. Shields do not make the ground stable; they protect workers inside them by stopping collapsing material reaching them.
