Hydraulic supports are often used as temporary or mobile support while other supports go in (Figure 12). Before installing them, ground pressures should be taken into account, and a competent person should design the system, consulting the geotechnical engineer. The temporary system's hydraulic capacity must be designed to withstand the ground pressure expected and the potential for collapse. These systems can become unreliable if badly maintained or misused, so pressure hoses and rams need frequent inspection for abrasion, fatigue, and rams that are bent or notched. Once a trench is fully supported they should be dismantled, inspected, repaired where needed and carefully stored before reuse. See AS 5047 on hydraulic shoring and trench lining equipment.
