Australia Commonwealth Child Safe Framework (2020) r1: Requirement 1: Annual child safety risk assessment and mitigation

The entity undertakes a risk assessment every year of its activities to work out how far it is responsible for, and in contact with, children, to assess the risks to their safety, and to put fitting controls on those risks. The assessment considers types of contact (direct physical, face-to-face, verbal, written, electronic and online, including indirect contact with children accompanying parents and contact through funded third parties); risk factors (the nature of the work, staff screening, staff contact, systemic weaknesses in governance and response processes, physical, cultural and online environments, funded third parties); and mitigation strategies across policies, training and compliance; child safe recruitment and screening (behaviour-based interview questions, working with children checks, reference and police checks, child safety induction); child-focused environments (visible workspaces, child-friendly materials, culturally appropriate contact and suitably trained interpreters, accompaniment by a parent or guardian, supervision including online contact, child safety in online design); complaints handling and reporting (documented, accessible, child-friendly procedures, trauma-informed responses, record keeping); and contracts and grants (Accountable Authority Instructions and child safety clauses and KPIs).
