Portable ladders and platforms must meet the relevant parts of the AS/NZS 1892 series (timber, reinforced plastic, and selection, use and care) or equivalent and should be used as instructed (ladders are the least preferred way of working at height); only non-conductive ladders may be used for work on or near electrical equipment, bearing in mind that damp or dirty ladders can conduct. Barriers must effectively separate people from adjacent live equipment and be visually inspected before and after each use, with defective items tagged and withdrawn; warning signs should be placed at or on barriers. Insulating mats for equipment under 650 V must comply with and be tested to AS/NZS IEC 61111, and insulating covers to AS 4202, with visual inspection before and after each use and defective items tagged.
