Battery tools should be preferred over mains tools. AS/NZS 3760 (in-service inspection and testing) and AS/NZS 3012 (construction and demolition sites) apply to portable tools. All portable tools, appliances and equipment must be supplied through an RCD or an isolating transformer to AS/NZS 61558 whose secondary is neither connected to the primary nor earthed, and portable RCDs or transformers should be at the supply end of extension leads. RCDs do not protect where there is no earth path or the tool contacts another supply (a drill striking an embedded cable), against welding electrode to return shock, for leakage between active and neutral or between phases, or on transformer-supplied tools; isolating transformers do not protect if the secondary is earthed, on contact with another supply, against welding shock or for leakage between live conductors. Care is required with tools having exposed conductive parts that could contact concealed live conductors (for example a chuck key left tied to a drill).
