Underground, water pipes are separated from electrical cables by at least 100 mm (pipe up to DN 65) or 300 mm (larger pipe) where the cable is marked with orange tape and mechanically protected, and 600 mm where it is neither; from extra-low voltage cables by 100 mm; and, for supplies up to 1000 V, from an earth electrode by 500 mm. From consumer gas pipes the separation is 100 mm or 300 mm by pipe size where the gas pipe has marker tape 150 mm above it, and 600 mm otherwise; from communication cables 100 mm. A water pipe may never run in or through a drain; it may share a trench with a drain if it sits on a shelf or compacted bedding at least 100 mm to the side and it sits a minimum of 100 mm higher than the drain's crown, with cover maintained.
