RCDs augment but never replace basic protection, are recognised for automatic disconnection, and must be installed for additional protection where Part 2 requires them: circuits, socket-outlets, lighting and hand-held equipment (Clause 2.6), wiring systems (Clause 3.9.4.4), heating cables, damp situations (Section 6) and specific installations under other AS/NZS standards.
