Section 7: Special hazard systems – AS 1851:2012 Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment

AS 1851:2012 Routine Service of Fire Protection Systems and Equipment 7.4.2-7.4.3: 7.4.2 and 7.4.3 Special hazard systems: monthly and six-monthly service schedules

Monthly: service the electrical detection and control to Section 6; check warning signs and labels are visible and legible; check the container enclosure is accessible, lit, ventilated and secured; check containers are secure, undamaged and mounted with air around the base, and that pressure has not dropped by more than a tenth of the nominal charge pressure (or, without a gauge, that the discharge indicator has not operated); check anti-tamper seals and pull pins, and that the cylinder valves, the actuators and any drop weight release are free, accessible and not damaged; check any lock-off valve is labelled and accessible; inspect the protected area for change in risk (volume, fuel type, use). Aerosol: generators not discharged, secure, moisture seals intact. Water mist: regulator setting, pumps and supplies per Section 3 and compressor cut-in and cut-out. Six-monthly: add the Section 6 detection routines; check and test mechanical and pneumatic detection (for example fusible links) so the alarm operates and can initiate discharge; check pneumatic piping and test pneumatic controls; test manual release; check pipework, flexible connectors and manifolds; check nozzles and aerosol generators are clear, aimed and secured; test the lock-off valve and its system inoperative indicator; check relief and vent discharge is not a hazard to people; check directional and check valve orientation; confirm by weighing or liquid level measurement that each container (including expellant) has lost no more than 5% of nominal charge mass for halocarbons or 10% for carbon dioxide, water and nitrogen (non-liquefied agents may be read from the gauge). Water mist: cycle through a full discharge cycle, pumps to Section 3, release and isolating water valves to Section 2. Retrofitting lock-off valves (with trapped pressure indication and relief) is recommended for agents that can reach unsafe concentrations in occupied areas, such as carbon dioxide.
