Handrails (including their extensions) and balustrades must not intrude into required circulation spaces. The handrail section is circular or elliptical, 30 mm to 52 mm in height and width over at least 270 degrees of the upper surface, with the larger dimension horizontal if elliptical; exposed edges and corners have at least a 5 mm radius. The top is 865 mm to 1000 mm above the stair nosing or the walkway, ramp or landing floor, at a consistent height through the ramp or stair and landings, except that it may vary at a stair extension, where a rail transitions between flights or into a balustrade, and within a 10 mm construction tolerance. A higher balustrade, where required, is provided in addition. Handrails are secure and rigid, with ends turned through 180 degrees, turned down to the ground, or taken fully back to an end post or wall. Clearance to a wall or other obstruction is at least 50 mm and continues for at least 600 mm above the rail; nothing obstructs a hand sliding along it; and the inside rail at landings is always continuous.
