Because the time value of money enters through discounting and the discount rate is pre-tax, projections leave out financing inflows and outflows and income tax receipts and payments. The net amount expected on disposal at the end of the asset's life is what an arm's length sale between knowledgeable, willing parties would yield after disposal costs, estimated like fair value less disposal costs but using prices prevailing at the estimate date for similar assets at the end of their lives under similar conditions, adjusted for general inflation and specific price changes unless the rest of the model excludes inflation. Fair value and value in use differ: fair value reflects market participant assumptions and ignores portfolio or grouping value, synergies with other assets, legal rights or restrictions specific to the current owner, and owner-specific tax benefits or burdens to the extent market participants would not share them. Cash flows in a foreign currency are projected in that currency and discounted at a rate suited to it, and the resulting present value is translated at the spot rate on the calculation date.
