A DPO needs skills, qualifications or experience in data science, data analytics, information security, information systems audit, law, audit or another relevant field, plus knowledge of national data protection law and of the controller's operations, and must complete an Authority-approved certification course. Certification training may be given only by the Authority with a higher learning institution or by accredited providers paying the prescribed fee; unaccredited training is an offence (r.11).
