AEOs self-assess against set security standards and best practices so their policies and procedures safeguard the supply chain until release at destination; the programme allows security plans tailored to the business model, including for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs may be recognised in risk analysis where they sit in vetted AEO supply chains). Customs and the AEO jointly document the security measures to be maintained, with written, verifiable processes under which business partners (manufacturers, suppliers, vendors) declare their intention to meet SAFE security standards, and risk-based periodic reviews.
