A financing statement, once filed, runs for five years (thirty years for public-finance or manufactured-home transactions, and until the mortgage is released for a record of a mortgage used as a fixture filing); it lapses at the end of the period unless a continuation statement is filed within six months before expiry, which extends it for another five years from the date it would have lapsed; a continuation filed outside the window is ineffective; on lapse the security interest becomes unperfected, retroactively against purchasers for value (section 9-515). Communication of a record to the filing office with the fee, or acceptance by the office, constitutes filing, except where the office refuses for one of the listed grounds (no name, no fee, no debtor address, no secured party address, no indication of organisation type for a debtor organisation, continuation outside the window, and the like); a filed record that the office should have refused but accepted is effective, except that a financing statement without the section 9-516(b)(5) information loses to purchasers that gave value in reasonable reliance (sections 9-516 and 9-338). Indexing errors by the office do not affect effectiveness (section 9-517).
