A financing statement is filed with the office designated for the State, usually the Secretary of State, except that fixture filings and statements for as-extracted collateral or standing timber go to the office that records mortgages on the related real property (section 9-501). It is sufficient only if it names the debtor, names the secured party (or a representative) and indicates the collateral (section 9-502); a fixture, as-extracted collateral or timber filing must also say that it covers such collateral and belongs in the real property records, and must describe the real property (with the record owner's name where the debtor has no recorded interest). A record of a mortgage may serve as a fixture filing. The collateral indication passes if it identifies the collateral reasonably under section 9-108 or claims all assets or all personal property (section 9-504). A financing statement can be filed before the security agreement exists or the security interest attaches, and the debtor's authentication of the security agreement authorises the filing for the collateral it describes (section 9-509).
