Cargo must be firmly immobilised or secured on or within the vehicle by structures, dunnage, shoring, tiedowns or a combination so that it cannot shift or fall, with the securement system able to withstand the 393.102 performance criteria (0.8 g forward, 0.5 g rearward and lateral, 0.2 g vertical). Tiedowns and anchor points must be in proper working order, marked with their working load limits or assigned the 393.108 default values, and the securement system's aggregate working load limit must reach at least half of the cargo weight. The minimum number of tiedowns is set by article length and weight (at least one for articles under five feet and 1,100 pounds, two for articles up to ten feet, and one additional tiedown for each ten feet beyond). The commodity-specific rules of 393.116 to 393.136 add requirements for logs, dressed lumber, metal coils, paper rolls, concrete pipe, intermodal containers, automobiles and light trucks, heavy vehicles and machinery, flattened or crushed vehicles, roll-on roll-off containers and large boulders. Drivers must inspect securement under 392.9.
