US DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Parts 171 to 180) 177.834-848: Highway loading, unloading, segregation, attendance and class-specific handling: securement, no smoking, brakes set, attendance of cargo tanks, the 177.848 segregation table and the Class 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 provisions (177.834 to 177.848)

What does 177.834-848 require?

Packages must be secured against movement and protected from damage during transport, loaded and unloaded with the handbrake set and wheels chocked where required, with no smoking within 25 feet of a vehicle containing explosives, oxidisers or flammables, and with a cargo tank attended by a qualified person throughout loading and unloading of flammable liquids, gases and certain other materials (177.834), and with the unloading of cargo tanks following the carrier's written procedures. Hazardous materials must be segregated in the vehicle under the 177.848 segregation table, which bars loading incompatible classes together or next to each other and requires separation of poisons from foodstuffs (177.841). The class-specific sections govern explosives (177.835, including the Class 1 vehicle and attendance rules), gases and cylinders (177.840, including the cargo tank discharge and emergency discharge control provisions), flammable liquids (177.837), Class 4 and 5 (177.838, 177.839), Class 7 (177.842, including transport index limits), and corrosives (177.839 and 177.843).
