Part 171: General information, applicability, incident reporting and international standards – US DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Parts 171 to 180)

US DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR Parts 171 to 180) 171.22-26: Use of international standards: ICAO Technical Instructions, IMDG Code, Transport Canada TDG and UN Recommendations with the additional US conditions (171.22 to 171.26)

What does 171.22-26 require?

Hazardous materials may be offered and transported under ICAO's Technical Instructions, the IMDG Code, or Canada's TDG Regulations, within the conditions and limitations of 171.22 to 171.26: the material must not be forbidden by the HMR, US-specific requirements for shipping paper emergency response information, training, security plans, incident reporting and the hazmat table's forbidden entries still apply, and the additional US conditions for air (for example Class 7 and lithium battery provisions) and vessel shipments and for shipments to or from Canada must be met. Offerors using an international authorisation must document which standard applies and the US overlay.
