Any part of a building in or through which a worker works or passes is soundly built and kept in good repair; each building used as a workplace protects workers from the weather, has a water-tight roof, is free of dampness that could affect the building or workers' health, and has a drainage system where a process makes the floor wet. Every workplace is kept clean and free of effluvia from drains, sanitary conveniences or other nuisances: dirt and refuse are removed daily from floors, benches, staircases and passages, workroom floors are cleaned at least weekly, and walls, partitions, ceilings and passages are washed at least every fourteen months, repainted or revarnished at least every seven years where painted, or whitewashed or colour-washed at least every fourteen months. A suitable room temperature is secured having regard to numbers, ventilation, humidity and surrounding temperature, no workplace is overcrowded to the risk of workers' health, every workroom measures at least three metres from floor to the lowest point of ceiling or roof, each workroom has an effective system for circulating fresh air, and mechanical ventilation counts only if it adequately removes odours and contamination from human occupation.
