SQF Code Edition 9 - Safe Quality Food 2.3.2: Specifications (Raw Material, Packaging, Finished Product, and Services)

What does 2.3.2 require?

Who drafts, manages and signs off specifications for inputs, packaging and finished goods, and how, is documented (2.3.2.1). Every input with a bearing on finished product safety (ingredients, additives, processing aids, hazardous chemicals, packaging and the rest) has a documented, up-to-date specification (2.3.2.2); all inputs, including those from sister sites, meet specification and the law of the country of manufacture and of destination where known (2.3.2.3), and are validated as not compromising safety and fit for purpose (2.3.2.4). Approved raw material suppliers must tell the site of composition changes that could affect formulation, such as protein, moisture, amino acid profile, contaminants, allergens or crop and seasonal variation (2.3.2.5). Food-contact packaging is certified as meeting regulatory acceptance or approval criteria by a continuing guarantee, certificate of conformance or regulator's certificate, or, failing those, by analysis showing no chemical migration, with records kept (2.3.2.6). Labels on finished products are accurate, legally compliant and approved by qualified staff (2.3.2.7). Services from contract providers affecting safety are described in full, kept current and include contract staff training requirements (2.3.2.8). Specifications for finished products are written down, kept up to date, signed off by both the site and the customer, available to staff and include, where applicable, microbiological, chemical and physical limits, composition supporting label claims, labelling and packaging requirements and storage conditions (2.3.2.9). All specifications are reviewed when changes affect safety, with review records, and a current list of all of them is kept (2.3.2.10).
