SQF Code Edition 9 - Safe Quality Food 11.7.3: Control of Foreign Matter Contamination

What does 11.7.3 require?

The responsibility and methods for preventing foreign matter contamination are written down, put into practice and explained to everyone, and inspections under 2.5.4.3 confirm plant and equipment are in good condition, nothing has detached or deteriorated, and they are free of potential contaminants (11.7.3.1). Glass, porcelain, ceramic, laboratory glassware and similar containers, equipment and utensils are not allowed in food processing or contact zones, except product packaged in such materials, instruments with glass dial covers and mercury-in-glass thermometers required by regulation, and any such items needed there are listed in a glass inventory with location and condition (11.7.3.2); regular inspections confirm food zones are free of glass and track the condition of listed items (11.7.3.3); glass dial covers and mercury-in-glass thermometers are checked at the start of each shift (11.7.3.4); after any breakage the area is closed off, cleaned and inspected (footwear and the cleaning tools too), and a responsible person clears it before operations start (11.7.3.5). Wooden pallets and utensils in food areas are dedicated, clean, in good order and regularly inspected (11.7.3.6); loose metal on equipment, covers and overhead structures is removed or fixed (11.7.3.7); knives and cutting instruments are controlled, clean and maintained, and snap-off blades are banned in manufacturing and storage areas (11.7.3.8); gaskets, rubber impellers and other wearing materials are inspected regularly (11.7.3.9).
