The basic unit that learns in an organization is the team rather than the individual, and team learning is aligning and developing a team's capacity to create what its members truly desire. It rests on dialogue, the free flow of meaning through a group that lets it think together and see the incoherence in its thought, under three conditions: all participants suspend their assumptions (holding them up for examination rather than defending them), all regard one another as colleagues (surrendering privileges of rank for the session) and a facilitator holds the context until the team can do so itself.
