The building blocks of the systems language are reinforcing feedback, the engine of accelerating growth or decline (virtuous and vicious cycles such as word of mouth or self-fulfilling expectations), balancing feedback, which pursues an explicit or implicit goal and is the usual hidden source of resistance to change, and delays between action and consequence, which cause overshoot and oscillation when unrecognized. Each influence works as a cause and as an effect at once, and responsibility is shared across the system. Rather than pushing harder against resistance, leaders look for the implicit goal or norm driving the balancing process, and in a system with delays they either act patiently or make the system more responsive.
