Unsealed batteries are kept in well ventilated rooms or in enclosures vented to the outside, and arranged so fumes, gases or electrolyte spray do not escape into other areas. Ventilation must diffuse battery gases and prevent an explosive mixture from building up. Racks and trays are substantial and treated to resist the electrolyte, and floors are acid resistant unless protected from acid accumulation. Workers who handle batteries or acids must be provided with face shields, aprons and rubber gloves. Quick-drench facilities for eyes and body must be within 25 feet of any area where batteries are handled, along with facilities to flush and neutralize spilled electrolyte and for fire protection. Battery charging installations are located in areas designated for charging, charging apparatus is protected from damage by trucks, and during charging the vent caps stay in place to avoid electrolyte spray and are kept in functioning condition.
