NHS England HTM 06-01 Electrical Services Supply and Distribution (2017 Edition) App4: Appendix 4: Mains extension leads with medical equipment only after competent risk assessment

Mains extension leads, especially multi-socket units, are not to be used with ME equipment unless a competent person versed in BS EN 60601-1 Clause 16 has first done a full risk assessment, because a broken protective earth exposes the patient to combined leakage currents, damage or one fuse can cut power to every connected device, added resistance limits power, floor-level units invite liquid ingress and interference may arise; powering several items with at least one ME device from one unit effectively creates an ME system, with in-house manufacture duties under the Medical Devices Regulations. Units marketed as 'medical grade' are not exempt. A safety poster may be displayed where ME equipment is used.
