New Zealand Information Security Manual (NZISM) 16.1.34.C.02: 16.1.34.C.02 Salted, HMAC-hashed and stretched storage of secrets

Agencies must store passwords and other authentication secrets securely, which includes: salting them with a salt of 32 bits or more, where each salt should be unique per password and should be generated randomly; hashing them with HMAC using SHA-2 or SHA-3; and stretching them, for example with PBKDF2 set to at least 600k iterations with HMAC-SHA-256 as the internal hash, or at least 210k iterations with HMAC-SHA-512 as the internal hash.
