NAIC Annual Financial Reporting Model Regulation (Model Audit Rule, MDL-205) mdl205-s13-work-papers: Require the accountant to make work papers and audit communications available to examiners and to retain them for up to seven years

The insurer must require its accountant to let department examiners review every work paper from the audit and every audit-related exchange with the insurer, at the insurer's offices, the department or another reasonable place the commissioner designates, and to retain them until the department files its examination report covering the audit period, but for at most seven years after the audit report date. Examiners may copy and retain pertinent work papers, and the review is treated as an investigation with the confidentiality that attaches to examination work papers.
