After consulting employees and their representatives, the employer must put the OSH policy in writing. It has to fit the organisation and its size and activities; be concise, clearly written and dated, and take effect once the employer or the organisation's most senior accountable person has signed or endorsed it; be made known and easy to reach for everyone at the workplace; be reviewed to confirm it still fits; and be available to interested parties where appropriate. At a minimum it commits top management to protecting the safety and health of every member of the organisation together with anyone else the work could affect, to preventing deaths, disabilities, injuries, ill health and disease arising from work, damage to property and the environment, and near misses, to complying with OSH law and other subscribed requirements, to consulting employees and their representatives and encouraging them to take an active part in each element of the system, and to continually improving the system's performance.
