Learning and development programmes aim to increase learners' flexibility to use each of the four modes as the situation requires, moving freely around the cycle, which Kolb calls full-cycle learning and links to integrative development. The inventories measure flexibility and the back-up styles a person uses in different contexts, which learners can use to set developmental goals in non-preferred modes; educators plan activities for the specific style skills they want learners to build. Development is supported by skills tied to each mode (interpersonal skills for experiencing, information skills for reflecting, analytic skills for thinking, action skills for acting), and by containing the dominant opposite mode as well as practising the weak one.
