The dual dialectics of grasping and transforming experience – Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle

Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle D2: Transforming dialectic: integrate reflection and action (praxis)

What does D2 require?

Designs engage both ways of transforming experience, inward reflection and outward action, so that action is informed by reflection and reflection by the consequences of action. Kolb draws on Freire's praxis: reflection without action becomes empty verbalism and action without reflection becomes activism; Lewin traced much individual and organisational ineffectiveness to an imbalance between gathering information and deciding to act. Reflecting on consequences corrects errors and refines future action, while acting on reflection breaks endless rumination.
