Kolb Experiential Learning Cycle C3: Abstract conceptualization: connect reflections to concepts and theory

Learners are helped to build concepts that pull their observations together into explanations that hold up logically, often with related subject matter delivered through lectures, readings or models at this point in the cycle, so that the meaning of the experience is understood and generalised. The capacity is built by practising model building and scenario creation and through analytic skills such as theory building and quantitative analysis; it is disrupted by intense emotion or pressure to act quickly. Kolb notes that formal education already over-weights this mode, and that conceptual learning detached from testing in experience breeds inflexibility.
