The people aspects should be exercised often enough for procedures to stay familiar and effective, combined with other exercises or run as specific learning events through drills, table top sessions and live play. The exercises should include at least: testing the automated call-out system no less than every six months, and using the mass contact system more routinely for important information; testing call trees no less than every six months, more often with high turnover, since complete and accurate contact lists are hard to keep (six months allows for recruitment, departures and role changes); rehearsing relatives response teams integrated with other teams; exercising how a reception centre is set up and run where the strategy relies on one; table top rehearsal of casualty management; and practising working from home or alternative locations where those are strategies.
