The problems and opportunities (and, for software under ISO/IEC/IEEE 12207, customer complaints) are analysed against the relevant trade-space factors, the criteria that decide whether an alternative is viable and express what matters to the mission or business, which can be technical (for example effectiveness measures) or commercial (for example share of the market). Attention goes to shifts in what the mission requires, new business openings, capabilities, better quality or performance, and efficiency. The problem or opportunity is then captured in a short statement (often called the mission statement or the strategic business objective) that its owners can put into words, because analysis that starts without one tends to fail.
