Collection gathers the preserved ESI and related hardcopy into a data set that can then be processed and reviewed, essentially by copying or imaging the files that are needed. Its objectives are a collection that captures what is potentially relevant, keeps the integrity, metadata, provenance and chain of custody of what is gathered, and uses tools and methods suited to the device (a desktop or a smartphone), the kind of data (e-mail or social media posts), the kind of matter (civil or criminal) and the jurisdiction of the proceeding or investigation, from methods able to recover deleted files to simple exports of target files by the user.
