Where the design allows several tools for the same or similar function, the work instruction tells the investigator how to pick the right one for conditions met during the examination, without undermining the atomic nature of the process. A risk register holding risk and uncertainty assessments for available tools helps; a tool with a blank entry is treated as a risk, since it probably has not been evaluated. A tool that is not the best fit may still be used if its evaluation, defined use in the process and associated risks are clearly set out (for example it is the best of a poor set, or the only tool giving a usable result).
