Clause 5: Performance evaluation process and its sources of information – ISO 45004:2024

ISO 45004:2024 5.3.2: Inspections

What does 5.3.2 require?

Inspections give a relatively quick and efficient view of how OH&S risk controls are implemented, how objectives are progressing and whether legal and other requirements are met. They let the organization watch and learn from workers how the work is really done; gather information both general and specific (working conditions, whether controls are used as intended, whether requirements are met); cover several OH&S performance aspects in one visit (correct PPE use, ventilation and other controls in operation, how workers collaborate, machinery used safely, chances to improve); gain insight into hazards, into risks and into why incidents happen, and assess high-risk or non-routine work that was carried out successfully; and to review process information such as breakdown procedures. The organization should consider whether regular inspections aimed at specific OH&S objectives are useful, for example a daily check of safety-critical equipment (cranes, ventilation, chemical enclosures, the safety devices on power presses).
