Throughout its activities, an organization should: identify where its energy, water and other resources come from; measure, record and report its significant consumption of them; take resource efficiency steps to cut how much energy, water and other resources it uses, judged against best practice indicators and benchmarks; where it can, supplement or substitute non-renewable resources with sources that are sustainable, renewable and low in impact; make the fullest possible use of recycled materials and reused water; manage water so that everyone using a watershed has fair access; promote sustainable purchasing; consider accepting extended producer responsibility; and encourage consumption that is sustainable. The resource areas concerned are energy efficiency; conserving water, its use and access to it; using materials efficiently; and reducing the resources a product needs.
