ISO 22313:2020 - Guidance on Business Continuity Management Systems 7.3: Awareness

What does 7.3 require?

Guidance that everyone working under the organization's control, employees, contractors and suppliers alike, knows the business continuity policy and objectives; how to make disruption less likely; their part in spotting incidents, limiting their effects, protecting themselves, evacuating, responding, continuing and recovering; why following the continuity policy and procedures matters; the reliance on suppliers and outsourcing partners and the risks that carries for business aims; what changes in operations mean for them; how they contribute to an effective BCMS, the gains from better continuity included; and their roles and duties in meeting the organization's requirements. The organization builds business continuity into its culture so that it becomes a core value and managers and interested parties know the policy and their part in the procedures; where that has happened, continuity develops more effectively, parties trust the organization to cope with disruption, resilience grows because the continuity consequences of decisions are weighed at every level, and disruption becomes both less likely and less damaging. Embedding is helped by involving all staff, spreading leadership, assigning duties, measuring against indicators, folding continuity into normal management, raising awareness, training skills and exercising plans. An awareness programme can include consulting staff throughout the organization on how continuity is set up and run; items in newsletters, briefings, induction and journals, on web pages and on working group and management agendas; publishing selected post-incident reports; briefings for top management; visits to the chosen alternative site; and regular contact with suppliers so they grasp the organization's requirements and can prove the continuity capability agreed. Awareness of trends in the field can be shown by taking part in industry groups and conference committees and by speaking at and attending conferences.
