ISO 22002-4:2025 Prerequisite programmes on food safety, Part 4: Food packaging manufacturing 12.3: Physical contamination: brittle materials, sharps and housekeeping

What does 12.3 require?

Where glass or brittle material is used in production or storage areas for anything other than making the packaging itself, there are periodic inspection requirements and a defined breakage procedure, and glass and brittle items such as hard plastic parts and sight glasses are avoided where relevant and possible. Product-contact surfaces in production and storage are free of splinters and other contamination sources and easy to clean effectively. A formal sharps procedure applies: no sharp objects or loose tools are left where product could be contaminated, and snap-off blade knives are forbidden. Buildings, facilities and equipment are cleaned of dust, cobwebs, flakes and fragments to keep housekeeping acceptable.
