Rigorous engineering and quality management underpin SOTIF. Only what is particular to SOTIF is added on top of established processes (the automotive quality standard IATF 16949, functional safety under ISO 26262, and the systems engineering lifecycle standard ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288), and the management, supporting-process and change-control parts of the functional safety series can be stretched to cover SOTIF work. SOTIF and functional safety activities may run in parallel and measures are evaluated by both disciplines for their impact. Requirements cascading and traceability get particular attention.
