Conducting an audit – ISO 19011:2026

ISO 19011:2026 6.4.2: Assigning the roles and responsibilities of guides and observers

What does 6.4.2 require?

With whatever approval is needed from the team leader, the audit client or the auditee, guides and observers may go with the audit team. They should not sway or get in the way of the audit. Where this cannot be assured, the team leader should be entitled to keep observers out of particular activities. The audit client and the auditee should agree between them how arrangements for observers on access, security, confidentiality, health and safety and the environment are managed. Guides named by the auditee should support the team and act when the team leader, or the auditor they are attached to, asks them. Their role includes: helping to find interviewees and confirming times and places; arranging entry to locations; making sure the rules of each location on access, health and safety, environment, security and confidentiality are known and followed, and that risks are dealt with; witnessing the audit for the auditee where appropriate; and giving clarification or help in gathering information where needed.
