The organization shall identify which interested parties matter for the EMS, what relevant needs and expectations (requirements) they have, and which of these it will treat as compliance obligations and handle through the system. Interested parties may have needs tied to environmental conditions, for example pollution, how available natural resources are, climate change, biodiversity or the health of ecosystems; a need or expectation that is not a legal requirement turns into a compliance obligation once the organization chooses to meet it.
